Non-Attendance Natural Burials

When deciding on a non-attendance natural burial, where the burial takes place without a formal service or mourners present, several factors need to be considered to ensure the process aligns with personal, environmental, and logistical needs.

Here are 10 key things to think about:

1. Environmental Impact

A natural burial emphasizes minimal environmental disturbance. Consider whether the burial site uses biodegradable materials and avoids chemicals like embalming fluids.

2. Burial Site Location

Research the specific natural burial grounds available. Some may be in remote, rural settings, and each site may have its own rules about grave marking and maintenance.

3. Legal Requirements

Understand the legal regulations in your region for natural burials, including permits, death certificates, and any local or state laws regarding burial without a traditional ceremony.

4. Cost

Natural burials tend to be less expensive than conventional burials, but there are still costs involved. Compare prices of different burial grounds and services.

5. Eco-friendly Caskets and Burial Materials

If a casket is used, it should be made of biodegradable materials like untreated wood, wicker, or even cardboard. Shrouds made from natural fibers may also be an option.

6. Grave Marking Options

Some natural burial sites may not allow traditional grave markers. Check if GPS coordinates or natural markers like trees or rocks are used to identify graves.

7. Long-term Site Conservation

Consider whether the burial ground contributes to land conservation efforts. Many natural burial sites aim to restore or preserve ecosystems.

8. Transportation and Logistics

Without a formal ceremony, transportation to the burial site may still need to be arranged. Some services include transportation in their fees, while others require separate arrangements.

9. Personal Wishes and Family Preferences

Ensure that your decision aligns with your own beliefs and the wishes of your family. Some may prefer a more traditional service, so discussing your choice with loved ones is important.

10. Aftercare and Memorialization

Decide whether you or your family want any type of aftercare or remembrance. Some families hold informal gatherings or memorials after the burial, even if they don’t attend the burial itself.

Taking these factors into account helps ensure a meaningful, eco-conscious decision that reflects personal values while also meeting practical and legal requirements.
